Out of work Clay Jannon takes a job as the night clerk at a 24-hour bookstore that never seems to go out of business despite the fact that his sales are in the single digits. Most of the bookstore's visitors seem to be on some sort of a borrowing program, returning one book and taking out another book from the towering shelves in the back that Clay has to retrieve with the help of three-story ladders. What's in these books? Why has Mr. Penumbra forbidden Clay to open them, and why has Mr. Penumbra instructed Clay to write down every detail about the visitors that borrow them? How long can Clay resist before sneaking a peek inside the covers?
This book is great fun for anyone who loves puzzles and codes, and who loves both old books and new technology.
