Staff Review:
The men of a small Mexican village all have immigrated to the United States to find work, leaving the town open to occupation by drug banditos. It’s up to the 19 year old Nayeli to go to the U. S. and recruit a group of men – a “Magnificent Seven” – to come and serve as the village’s protectors. At the heart of the quest is Nayeli’s search for her father, who left years earlier and has not been heard from. Funny, poignant and at times heartbreaking, Into the Beautiful North chronicles the journey and adventures of Nayeli and three of her friends as they make their way to and across the American border. The book also gives a complex and human perspective of the immigration problem from the Mexican’s point of view.
