[Young Adult] This book is a wonderfully inventive first novel about a boy in search of the truth behind his grandfather's fanciful stories about his childhood. First suspecting that the stories were all tall tales disguising the real horror of his grandfather's escape from the Nazis, it turns out that the stories weren't just true, they were only the tiniest hint of an amazing race of peculiars who live among us, hidden and protected from the evil creatures who hunt their essence. The novel is based in part on found vintage photographs, which make the book even more fascinating.
