Get Ready To Read! - Parent/Early Childhood Educator Workshop

Don't miss this free workshop which will share things parents, early childhood educators, child care providers and adult family members can do to help preschool children get ready to read and write through everyday activities. "Help the children you care about get ready to read. Get going on the road to reading with these free child friendly activites." This workshop will be presented by Charmaine Godley, Director, Get Ready To Read! Southeast Regional Center (www,getreadytoread.org) and is co-sponsored by Clayton County Public Schools Pre-Kindergarten Program. Recommended for parents, educators, and child care providers of children ages 3-5. During the workshop, literacy and craft activites will be provided in another area of the library for children ages 3-8. Please register in advance by visiting, telephoning, or emailing the library.

Family Storytime for Toddlers

Toddlers, ages 21-36 months will enjoy interactive stories, songs, action verse and an extended activity. Advance registration is required but it is necessary to register ONLY ONE TIME for the entire series. You may register for a series any time, in person, by email, or by telephone. Parents must remain in the story time with their children.
PLEASE NOTE: This story time series is for families only and we regret that we can not permit child care groups to attend this story time series. However, the library does schedule story times on other weekdays specifically for both in-home and center child care groups. Please ask staff for scheduling details.

Leaders of Tomorrow (L.O.T.) Tutoring/Mentoring Program Series

Free tutoring series for elementary, middle, and high school students. Offered by the volunteers from the B.A.S.I.C. Empowerment Corporation, a non-profit organization. This organization strives to meet the academic needs of the students in our community. There will be tutoring, homework assistance, and academic enrichment exercises. Registration is for the whole series and is based on a first-come, first-serve basis. A parent MUST complete a parental permission form and a registration form either prior to participation or on the first day of participation. This series is planned to last at least through the 2009 --2010 school year. Only 20 students may participate and once that many have registered, a waiting list will be taken. The Clayton County Library System is providing space for this program as a public service. All questions about this series must be communicated directly to B.A.S.I.C. Empowerment Corporation via email or by phone.

Replenish classroom shelves. Lots of affordable holiday gifts! Books and more for infants through adults. Come early. Reorders are limited to additional copies, IF AVAILABLE, of books sent with the opening day book fair. Based on a percentage of sales, the library earns paperback books to use as rewards for each child or teen who reads 18 books during the 2010 Summer Reading Program. We accept checks, cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover cards, Debit cards with charge card logos (all purchases go through as charges), and purchase orders. New Generation Academy Math Tutoring Series

Preschool Story Time's African American Read-In

We would like to celebrate the Twenty-First National African American Read-In by conducting our own read-in during our preschool story time. We will be presenting books that feature African American writers. Other activities will include songs, finger plays, and movement. The Read-In has been endorsed and sponsored by the International Reading Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, The Black Caucus of NCTE and the NCTE.

Practice your spelling, vocabulary, and math skills, make friends with other competitors, and have lots of fun playing this classic board game! Scrabble Club meets the second and fourth Thursday of each month, so mark your calendars. Advanced registration is required so that library staff will know how many participants will be playing.

The Art of Storytelling

Would your child like to learn to be a storyteller? Professional storyteller, Verna Muthoni, "Sensamaya," will teach youth how to tell stories. The group will meet the 2nd Saturday of each month. Children must be in 4th grade or above and reading on at least 4th grade level. There will be performances for friends and family later in the year.

Basic French Classes for Children

This class taught by Ms. Anne-Marie will include learning colors, days of the week, counting, greetings, basic vocabulary and more. Parents, please be advised that in order for your child to benefit from this class they plan on attending every Saturday. Each Saturday, stories will be read in both English and in Spanish. Talented bilingual volunteers will read stories in Spanish and library staff will read in English. The program will end with a craft. For the whole family. Participarán estudiantes talentosas, que leerán en ambos idiomas (español e inglés). Después de la activad de lectura, los participantes harán una actividad manual. Estas actividades son gratis para toda la familia.
