Surprise Art Contest

You CANNOT add to the elements included other than attaching them to a piece of paper. Bring your completed artwork and receive prizes while they last.

Advance registration is required but it is necessary to register ONLY ONE TIME for the entire series. You may register for a series any time, in person, by email, or by telephone. This series will run from June 2 through August 4. Parents must remain in the story time with their children. PLEASE NOTE: This story time series is for families only and we regret that we can not permit child care groups to attend this story time series. However, the library does schedule story times on other weekdays specifically for both in-home and center child care groups. Please ask staff for scheduling details.

Chess Club for Youth

This club meets at the library weekly and is for kids, ages 8-14. Learn to play chess or learn new strategies. This is a great way to meet others and improve your game. All abilities are welcome to come. There is no advance registration, but be prompt as we begin exactly at 6:00. We are always looking for adult helpers to assist with the chess club. If you are an adult interested in volunteering to help with the chess club, please contact Bea Mengel.

Move over Bill Nye, here comes Ms. Sherry and her Science Lab. Join Ms. Sherry each week as she explores the wonderful world of science. Each week will focus on a new science topic.
Advanced registration is required. Space and supplies are limited.
For ages 7 & up
*Groups scheduling to attend are limited to one Science Lab session and no more than 20 children. This will allow other groups to attend.

Teen Workshop: Mom Can I Have Some Money?

This is a workshop for teens on how to earn money by starting their own business. Ms. Zdenka S. Bennett is the author of "Mom Can I Have Some Money?" Yes If you Can Earn It. She will also be the instructor for each session. The workshop consists of four one hour sessions. Each patron has to commit to attending all four sessions and be prepared to bring a business idea on the first day. Recommended for ages 12-18,ONLY 20 STUDENTS MAXIMUM.

Baby Talk

This program is an hour of one-on-one interactive play, songs, finger plays, rhymes and book sharing time for parents, caregivers, or grandparents with their young ones. We have incorporated a component called “Souns®” that was created by Brenda Erickson from Counterpane School. Souns® engages children to experience the sound a letter makes with the symbol that is represented. This hands-on approach is another way to make an early literacy connection with your child. Thanks to the Rotary Club of Lake Spivey for their generous donation for the Souns® materials. Learn more about Souns® at www.souns.org. You must register in advance. However, you need only register one time for the entire series. This series will begin on June 4 and run through August 6. Space is limited. This program is for children ages newborn-20 months. Due to the concern for the safety of these young children, older children, up to age 6, may not accompany the Baby Talk attendees. Alternate arrangements must be made for older children.

Hip Hype Aerobics

Each Saturday enjoy a free bilingual English/Spanish story time that will be followed by a craft. Each story will be read in both English and in Spanish. In addition to library staff members, guest readers will include Cecilia Romero and another talented bilingual students. Cada segundo y cuarto sábado, Cecilia Romero leerá cuentos en español y en inglés. Y una estudiante talentosa que leerá en ambos idiomas (español e inglés). Ojo-de-Dios/Eye of God Medallion Craft

Make an "Eye of God/Ojo de Dios" medallion at this make-it-and-take-it craft session. Originally developed by the Huichol Indians of Mexico the "God's Eye" is meant to ensure and long and healthy life and has come to be considered by some children as a "good-luck" symbol. All supplies will be provided by the library. Groups are invited to participate but advance registration is required to ensure enough craft kits. This program is for adults, teens, and children to enjoy together.
