An Introduction to Nonfiction Literature for Families

Learn about Social Studies websites for families via an interactive lobby online display and discussion with educator, Cynthia Bohannon-Brown. Learn about the new Social Studies curriculim for elementary school students.

Ms. Bohannon-Brown will also share information about resources from the Clayton County Public Library and will show families how to create quality literacy time at home.

This presentation supports the PTA's Family-School Partnership Initiative. Handouts will be provided. Stop by, visit a few minutes, and come away with some valuable information that will help you work with your elementary-school-age children.

The presenter, Ms. Bohannon-Brown, has teaching experience with Clayton County Public Schools and is one of the educators participating in the "Peach e-books Project: Social Studies Resources for GA. K-5 Parents." This project has created a website, www.peachebooks.com "which was created to provide parents with resources to support the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) for K-5 Social Studies." This site was designed by highly-qualified, certified Georgia educators and is provided as a not-for-profit service to families and other educators.

Baby Talk

This program is an hour of one-on-one interactive play, songs, finger plays, rhymes and book sharing time for parents, caregivers, or grandparents with their young ones. We have incorporated a component called “Souns” that was created by Brenda Erickson from Counterpane School. Souns engages children to experience the sound a letter makes with the symbol that is represented. This hands-on approach is another way to make an early literacy connection with your child. Thanks to the Rotary Club of Lake Spivey for their generous donation for the Souns® materials. Learn more about Souns® at www.souns.org.
You must register in advance. However, you need only register one time for the entire series. The current series will run through October 9th. Space is limited.
This program is for children ages newborn-20 months. Due to the concern for the safety of these young children, older children, up to age 6, may not accompany the Baby Talk attendees. Alternate arrangements must be made for older children
