Most of the public schools in Clayton County use Accelerated Reader (AR) as an instructional tool to assist in improving students’ reading abilities. This program is effective when AR testing is combined with the feedback from a student’s teacher. There are MANY AR tests and each school decides on which tests to purchase. Each school purchases the books that are included in the tests that were purchased. Therefore each school has a different set of AR tests and books than does other schools. For budgetary reasons, the public library does not own all of the titles listed on all of the school AR lists. Since the AR tests must be purchased and since the program is not effective without a teacher’s feedback, the public library does not have any of these tests available on library computers.
However the Clayton County Library System strives to assist children in locating the AR titles they wish to read. For the other schools, the Headquarters Library and the Clayton County library closest to the public school usually has a Reference print copy of the school’s AR list. This list must be used in the library and library staff will be glad to assist you in locating books on these lists. If the book is not owned by the Clayton County Library System, it might be available FOR FREE from another PINES library. Please ask library staff to assist you in completing a free “Hold” request for any of these books. The requested book will then be delivered to your preferred Clayton County public library via a courier service and you will have two weeks to read the book and you may return it back to any PINES library, including any library in Clayton County. The availability and date of each AR list is based on those delivered to the public library by each individual school.
Lexile Measure
Parents received a letter in the mail concerning the new Lexile Measure to improve reading and english skills. The libraries will not be able to look up your child's Lexile measurement or tell you which Lexile level our books are at. Please look up books at the Lexile website so that we can help you find these book by author and title.
Research shows that one of the best ways to improve a child’s or teen’s reading is to allow the student to read for fun. Many excellent books are available at the public library which are not listed on AR tests.
