Internet Safety
The Internet is one of the best places to get information and communicate today. However, the internet can be a way for predators to lurk and harm your children. Clayton County Library System strives to keep you and your child safe at our libraries while you are using our internet computers. We suggest you take certain steps at the library and at home to ensure you and your child's safety.
- Ask your child if they have a MySpace, or Facebook account or a blog.
- Allow your child to only instant message known friends or family; just like in public, the rule of "never talk to strangers" should be enforced.
- Limit the amount of time your child spends using a computer. Gaming addiction is a serious and growing problem.
- Remember bullying and harassment has moved from the school hallways to emails, instant messages, blogs, web sites, and account pages (Face book and MySpace) if your child is being harassed or bullied contact the proper authorities and print out all messages. If your child is the aggressor you need to put a stop to their actions immediately.
- Contact the police if your child is approached in any inappropriate way on the internet.
If you own a PC with an internet connection:
- Keep it in an open area where you can see what your child is doing.
- Consider installing parental control software on your computer.
- Consider purchasing a computer either without an internet connection or that does not have an "always on" connection.
