| Sat, 5 Jul 2008 09:00 -0400 Kids "Catch the Reading Bug" 2008 Vacation Reading Program Anytime between May 31 and August 6, young people (infants to 18 years) are encouraged to visit one of the six Clayton County public libraries to register for the annual Vacation Reading Program (formerly known as Summer Reading Club). Upon registration, participants ages infants-11 years will receive a “Catch the Reading Bug” reading log. Ages 12-18 years will pick up a “Metamorphosis” reading log. Be sure to pick up the library’s monthly calendar of events/programs and look at the library’s notebook of summer program flyers. For a listing of the programs at the county’s six libraries, go to www.claytonpl.org Click on “Calendar of Events.” After registration, the young reader may read anywhere. Participants are not required to read at the library. There is no minimum age for participation since young children and infants may have books read aloud to them. Parents of infants are also invited to register their children. Children and teenagers may read any reading material that is acceptable to their parents including books, magazines, newspapers, comic books, graphic novels, instruction manuals, recipes, and Internet text. Each participant is requested to read materials at his/her reading level. Although the six Clayton County libraries have wonderful selections of books, readers are not required to read books from the library. Participants of any age may also count books that are read aloud to them. Books heard at story times may also be included. Summer story times are being offered at selected Clayton County public libraries and at Barnes & Noble Booksellers on Mt. Zion Rd. in Morrow (11 a.m. Thursdays & Saturdays). Children may also listen to books recorded on cassettes or CDs. Special needs children may participate in any way that best serves their needs. Vacation Reading Program participants may choose to keep track of their reading by the number of books read OR by the number of hours spent reading. Thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Southlake for funds to purchase “reward” books. |
