Preparing for College

Finding the right college may seem like a daunting task but it can also be a rewarding journey of self discovery and where you ultimately end up will influence your future in ways you might not have considered yet. Hopefully, this guide will help you find the right fit for you.


General Resources

Get your college search organized early. This site enables you to set up a free account and create an "action plan" that will keep you on task as you prepare to find the right school.

web GA College 411
This site developed in collaboration with multiple state agencies is essential for students looking at schools in Georgia. It includes useful information about the HOPE Scholarship and other financial aid opportunities for Georgia residents. GA College 411 is a mentoring site as well with a wealth of online resources to help students and their families select a college, navigate the admissions process and financial aid opportunities.

Another good site that will help you stay focused on finding the right school for you. The site is divided into four sections: Get Started, Find The Right School, Prepare For Tests and Pay For School.

Guidance and Counseling

Probably the best resource at your disposal is the Guidance Counselor at the school you attend. Visit the Clayton County Schools Guidance and Counseling web site to learn about advisement dates, locate contact information for your advisor and find additional web sites that will assist you in your hunt for the perfect school.

Finding the Right School

web College Affordability and Transparency Center
The U.S. Department of Education created this site to compare the overall costs of over a thousand different colleges. You can view reports on the highest and lowest priced colleges, you can search for costs at a particular college you are interested in, or you can search for a degree type and get lists of colleges that offer that degree along with the associated costs.

web GA College 411
A subsection of GA College 411 is worth mentioning again. It gives overviews, offers comparison tools and online tours of the 104 colleges in Georgia (public and private) that qualify for state funded financial aid. Two Year, Four Year and Technical schools are included.

Financial Aid

One of the largest scholarship sites on the internet. Registration is required.

web Federal Student Aid
Go straight to the source and set up a FAFSA account with the U.S. Department of Education's site for free information on preparing for and funding your education. Applications for Federal Financial Aid are also downloadable from the site.

Tips to help you get a handle on financial aid and understand the terminology involved. An online calculator will help you estimate how much its all going to cost.

db Foundation Grants To Individuals
This is an excellent database of thousands of potential grant opportunities for students, artists, and other individuals. It is only available from within the Clayton County Library branches.

Get the run down on what college really costs and what opportunities are available for Georgia residents. A scholarship matching wizard will help you determine what opportunities you are eligible for. After setting up an account, you can even apply for certain types of loans directly from GA College 411.

The library's Brainfuse service includes access to practice tests for the SAT and ACT, as well as online tutoring to get you up to speed.

other Clayton County Adult Education Program
Clayton County offers day and night classes for Adult Basic Education GED Preparation and Adult Education English Literacy. Check this site for dates, times, and locations for the classes and the tests.

galileo Learning Express Library
Practice tests and electronic test preparation books for many official exams including the SAT and ACT, and the GED. (GALILEO Password Required)

galileo RB Test Prep
RB Test Prep provides online SAT, ACT, PSAT, and PLAN test preparation courses through video lessons. To get the most out of using RB Test Prep, they have prepared a video tutorial you can watch before getting started. (GALILEO Password Required)

galileo Test Preparation E-Books
NetLibrary has a variety of online test-preparation guides (SAT, GED, TOEFL, police officer exam, ASVAB, etc.). Just log in and search for the subject you are interested in. (GALILEO Password Required)

A collection of more than 100 online textbooks written at high school and college levels and provided for free online. Categories include art history, biology, business and management, chemistry, computer science and information systems, earth science, economics and finance, education, engineering, history, languages, law, linguistics, mathematics, music, philosophy, physics, political science, and psychology. (Some texts are higher quality than others.)
